We currently welcome around 350 people each week to make music at Penwith Music Centre, and many are in groups open to the community, welcoming new members. We're listing them below, with times and venue - so please come and try something new!


Mondays

Tuesdays

Mounts Bay Singers:
Community Room 1, 7.30-9.15pm

We are a mixed group, welcoming all levels of singing and sight reading ability. For more information, please contact Sheila Farmer at sheilajfarmer@hotmail.com

Taiko drumming: Gallery, 7-9pm

Taiko means 'Big Drum' in Japanese, it is both a performance and percussive art form that has been popularised globally by the Kodo Drummers. Jason Davis is a leading exponent of Taiko in the South West - please contact him for more information on 01736 351501. Classes £4.00 per session.


Wednesdays

Levow an Bys: Community Room 1, 7-9pm

A new choir in Penzance for anyone who just wants to sing - 'Levow an Bys' means 'World Voices' in Cornish. Repertoire is from all over the world, there are no auditions and all the music is taught by ear. Everyone is welcome!


Thursdays

BoumBoum West African drumming (beginners / improvers):
Drama Hall, 7-9pm

Claire Simpson leads the beginners' djembe session, working on technique and core rhythms, while Amanda Pickering leads a class for people already familiar with the basics and ready to develop their repertoire and technique at intermediate level. All rhythms are traditional Malinke, with other instruments including kodo kodo, balafon, gongoma, bolon, as well as the djembe and doundouns. Instruments available to loan, classes £4.50 per session.

As of June 08, this class will combine with a new Afro-dance class led by Hannah Turk-Richards, where dancers and drummers will work together on Malinke-inspired pieces. Please check back for details, or contact Amanda at boumboum@boumboum.co.uk.

 

A Country Choir: Community Room 1, 7-9pm

Vicky Abbott, well-known for her work with the fantastic Acorn Choir in Penzance, leads a new choir working with country and western song.


Fridays

Penzance Choral Society, Gallery, 7.30 - 9pm

One of the oldest mixed voice choral societies in the country, and possibly the most Western! We are a friendly group, and new members are always made very welcome. There are no auditions, so come and join us!

 


Saturdays

Penzamba, Drama Hall, 10am -1.30pm

Penzamba are Penzance's lively samba band, who play at many local community events. We are always welcoming to new and enthusiastic people who would like to come and join us, with or without any previous musical/ percussive experience.

 

A Cappella Madrigal Group, Gallery 10am - 12noon (fortnightly)

Kokoro Taiko drumming group performing at the UK Taiko Festival

Jason Davis and his Taiko group, Kokoro, will be performing this weekend at the 4th UK Taiko Festival.

Hertfordshire County Council’s Music Service and Exeter-based Taiko group Kagemusha Taiko have invited some of the country’s best acts for a weekend of spectacular performances.
